Imagine

Total Darkness

Imagine there was no electricity –  no power.

There would be no lights.

Imagine living without lights

How limited would you be?

Total Darkness

Most of Bougainville is without power or lights.

Some individuals run generators – they’re expensive to purchase and operate, and virtually impossible to repair.

The accepted form of lighting is by hurricane lamp, with kerosene as the fuel. Kerosene is expensive and subject to regular shortages of supply.

Appropriate Technology Solution

Of the many different forms of lighting technology available, Tehillah considers that solar power represents the most cost effective and appropriate option for Bougainville.

Experiments with extremely power efficient ultra-bright Light Emitting Diodes (LED’s),  powered by rechargeable batteries and small solar panels, produced astounding results.

A number of units were installed in Bougainville for extended trials in 2004.

Application

At the conclusion of these trials it was decided to produce these units in quantity and offer them for sale in the remote areas of Bougainville and its surrounding islands.

Villagers can now have reliable and affordable lighting for the first time.

The Light

Currently we are using a kit with 18 LED’s and an electronic circuit which enhances their light output.

A sealed, maintenance free 12 volt lead acid battery provides enough power for the light to operate for many hours, and a small solar panel recharges it during the day.

Originally we planned to produce a light with a similar output to a kerosene lamp.  However, we have far surpassed this while still keeping the cost at an affordable level.
